This course introduces scholars to the foundations of the Philippine criminal justice system, exploring its five pillars: law enforcement, prosecution, judiciary, corrections, and community-based rehabilitation.
Scholars will be able to identify the structure and functions of each pillar, analyze the role of the PNP in law enforcement, apply core principles of criminal procedure to real-world scenarios, and discuss current challenges in the Philippine criminal justice system.
Intelligence gathering, analysis, and counter-intelligence operations.
Organisation, management, and administration of law enforcement agencies.
Medico-legal investigation, death classification, and autopsy procedures.
Scientific methods applied to crime investigation: fingerprinting, serology, trace evidence.
Revised Penal Code: Book II — specific crimes against persons and property.
Principles of the Revised Penal Code: Book I — felonies and circumstances.
Social factors influencing criminal behaviour and deviance.
Foundational concepts, history, and scope of criminology as a discipline.
This foundational course introduces criminology as a field of study, profession, and component of the criminal justice system. It examines the nature and scope of criminology, its historical development, major schools of thought, crime and criminal behavior, victimization, crime causation, prevention, and control. The course also introduces the roles of criminologists in law enforcement, public safety, investigation, corrections, research, and community service, with emphasis on ethics, human rights, and evidence-informed practice.
